Painting ‘bloom’ effects in watercolour

Painting that powdery white bloom you so often see on soft fruit can prove a big challenge, especially in watercolour.

You might consider tackling it by applying white paint on top of your fruit afterwards.  However, with watercolour, that doesn’t get the best results.

Instead it’s best to paint the bloom first and layer the darker colours around, as I demonstrate in this video:

I hope this inspires you to get your sketchbook out and give these bloom effects a try this weekend. Please let me know with a comment below how you get on!

Very inspirational … are the classes a wee bit slower and is the drawing made available for those of those that love to paint watercolors but have to take days on making a drawing? Many thanks for this wonderful tip video on the plums.

Yes to both! The tutorials are mostly in real time (all relevant demos are) and we supply traceable drawings for you to work from.
