How to paint a patterned bearded iris in watercolour

Have you ever looked at a flower and thought that it already looks like a painting? That’s exactly what I thought when I saw this beauty iris ‘Arctic Fancy’ at the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley.

I literally had to lie down on the ground to take this photo prompting some pretty odd looks from other garden visitors!

It was the vivid colours that attracted me, but also the pattern of dots and lines that look like they’ve been painted onto the petals.

As beautiful and painting-like as these flowers are, they can actually prove tricky to paint, as can the hairy ‘beard’ parts.

So with iris season around the corner I thought I would share with you a few tips for painting realistic looking irises:

If you have had a go at painting irises before, please do let me know how you got on in the comments below, and even upload it via social media using #AnnaMasonArt – I’d love to see it!

Happy painting!
