How to paint realistic water droplets in watercolour

Water droplets can add a touch of magic to a painting.

And they can cause quite a bit of confusion when trying to paint them in watercolour.

Although they sit on top of a subject in real lifewhen you work in watercolour you can’t just paint them on top of your finished subject as an afterthought.

That’s because they contain really light shiny highlights which have to be handled differently. In this little video I show you how I do it:

If you’re inspired to paint some raindrops or dew drops on your own subjects, please drop me a note in the comments!

I am really fond of your painting. And I’d like to register to be your membership. While I can’t either open the video or the link. It’s really frustrating. Do you ever think about cooperating with any Chinese online video teaching company’s? Hope I could learn from you pretty soon.

Hi Ting, I’m sorry you’re struggling to register. Send us an email (you can do it via the ‘FAQs and Contact’ link) and someone in my team will help you out.

Our Tuesday morning watercolor group is painting (And eating) garden tomatoes next week. I will be sure to share this, and wet my tomatoes, for a fresh-picked look. Thank you

I can’t wait to get started! I just got 2 of your books last week and my brushes got here yesterday from Rosemary & Co., paper due in a week. I got a block of Arches hot press and one of cold press and I’ve signed up for your classes on Bluprint! I’m so excited! I’m presently learning loose watercolor but lean more toward more detailed pictures. I’ve been watching your Pear tutorial but am too chicken to start. That will probably be my first try. I’m really new to watercolor but am having so much fun learning. Can’t wait to start yours!! Thanks so much for sharing your talent!!

    Thanks Anna,
I have not run away! I love the quick enticing videos you are kind enough to send. I am still trying to sort my eye problems and now know my right hand operation was a bit of a disaster. HOWEVER, I will be back regardless of a wonkie hand and eyes. Cheers Lesley Haines aka ZIGGY

I really learnt so much through this free tutorial. I am not a professional artist and I have no proper training in painting so it is very helpful for me. Now I could try this technique to make 3D paintings. Really Thanks.

Where I live (Mendoza-Argentina) it rains very little, it is a dry climate. So I adore the rain, the water and that flower with its drops.
I am happy because I have your book, it is very clear, your teachings feel very close. Thank you a thousand times.
